How to build your immune system

With schools going back and the winter months upon us, there couldn’t be a better time to build your immunity. Lucky at Roots our main aim is to help people achieve a better all-round state of wellness. Your immune system is a miraculous machine capable of fighting off colds, viruses and constantly learning and changing. Making sure your body is in the best state it can be is the best thing you can do for you and for others around you. So, where to begin?

I know we bang on about this but honestly a good morning start is the best thing. Simple lemon, Manuka honey, fresh ginger and turmeric gives your body the best start to the day. We also now stock a genius little morning health kick. Steeps One Shoot is an immune-boosting daily wellness shot made up of apple cider vinegar, turmeric, ginger, garlic, horseradish, chilli and onion. The taste is savoury and intense but as a vinegar and pickle lover, I love it! This daily shot is designed to keep the immune system fully charged. It’s also simple take first thing in the morning with just a 10ml shot.

We also stock a range of supplements to help your overall immunity. I’d had flu in January 2019 and it turned into pneumonia. I just couldn’t get myself feeling well again and I seemed to get every bug, cough and cold doing the rounds. A good friend of mine suggested some multi vitamins and omega-3 tablets, and I’ve barely been ill since. They made such a difference to my overall health and energy. I used Advanced Nutrition Programme’s Skin Vitality 1 and Omega 3 as it’s a simple one pill all-rounder. They’re both pregnancy-safe and perfect for men and women so my husband can also take it. BetterYou does some great multi vitamin sprays too for both children and adults, meaning all the family are doing a little bit to help keep each other safe.

Hydration

Constantly drinking and preventing dehydration is fundamental for overall health. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water, so being slightly dehydrated places the body under additional strain it doesn't really need. Drinking plain water is best but if you need flavour, try adding slices of lemon or fresh mint, and citrus fruits like grapefruit to help keep it more palatable. Hopefully that will stop you reaching for juices and squash which just adds too much sugar to your system. Our Frank Green water bottles keep water cool and fresh, or if fresh tea (caffeine-free) is more your thing, make a giant one and enjoy over time.

Diet

We all now know that being overweight is not going to help our immune system. But what we eat can help us in fighting these virus. Sugar is an enemy and it’s hidden in everything. If you’re struggling with your weight try removing it and working out ways to keep your sweet tooth in check. Add honey to a hot drink. Eat more fruit, dried or fresh. Of course with anything sweet you still need to find a balance but to begin with finding out healthy alternatives you enjoy eating will make a massive difference. Eat all the colours you can and adding healthy fats like avocado and fish, like organic salmon, will hep your body work harder and be in a better place. You may even lose a few pounds too—bonus!

Gut health and immunity are very deeply connected. A strong gut will in turn help you maintain a strong immune system. Our ranges of prebiotics are brilliant, but if you want to do this naturally then adding fermented foods to your diet such as live yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir will help build up the good beneficial bacteria in your gut. This in turn supports a healthy gut and system.

Stress

Do everything you can to reduce stress. This may lie in exercise, meditation and a better night’s sleep. Or look into adding CBD if you’re finding that your stress and anxiety is feeling too out of control. Our blog post on where to start with CBD is a great help if you’re thinking about starting this.

Whatever you do for your body right now, having a constant hand sanitiser with you is of course a good idea too!
