How to drink your greens

We all know we should eat your greens but how good is it for you to drink your greens?

Green juice drenches your body in plant nutrients and chlorophyll (aka liquid sunshine). Chlorophyll strengthens your immune system, helps control inflammation, increases red blood cell production, and helps enhance your cells’ ability to carry oxygen. So pretty great.

But what you need to be careful with with green juice is not making it too sweet. The more sugar (fruit) you add, the more the benefits fade away. Also when juicing you need to remember all the fibre is taken away as the juicer gives you the liquid. So maybe juicing one day and making a smoothie the next is a good way to balance and vary your diet.

Another thing to watch for is using seasonal veg and fruit. One of the best ways to do green juice is to have an organic veg and fruit box delivered and mix and match what you have in there. It will give you variety and help make the decision for you. Able and Cole are great for delivering seasonal veg or better still, hunt out a local greengrocer near you. Mine doesn’t deliver but they do get me a delicious box ready every week for a budget of my choice and I simply collect each week.

The recipes below are very changeable. I love the earthiness of kale but for some people that can be too much. Tiff would include spinach instead —still brilliant and slightly more palatable. A broccoli stork is a great thing to juice and you can save the stems for a dinner so its a great way of using the whole plant. Bonus! Half an apple or pear is a good way of making the juice more palatable and adding sweetness. A kiwi is also a great addition with it’s immune system boosting as well as aiding digestion and helping blood pressure. I also like to add a small amount of lemon or lime for extra vitamin C and that tangy citrus kick.

Super green juice recipe

Makes one.

  • ½ apple
  • 1 cucumber
  • Large handful of spinach or kale
  • ½ lemon peal and flesh of ½ lemon
  • Thumb-sized piece of ginger

Wash all veg/fruit and juice. Mix well before drinking.

Other things you could add:

  • Parsley
  • Basil
  • Mint
  • Broccoli stem

Celery green juice recipe

Makes one.

  • 5 stalks of celery
  • ½ lime peal and flesh
  • Thumb-sized piece of ginger
  • ½ cucumber

Wash all veg/fruit and juice. Mix well before drinking.

Green juice with fibre

Makes one.

  • 1 kiwi
  • ½ large cucumber
  • Large handful of spinach or kale
  • ½ lime peal and flesh of ½ lime
  • Thumb-sized piece of ginger
  • 1 avocado

Juice all the veg and fruit in a juicer. Add whole peeled avocado to juice then blend with stick blender.
